About The Retreat

The Retreat is a fabulous individual period property with beautifully presented accommodation and a delightful, recently improved garden set in the heart of the popular village of South Milton. The stunning beaches of South Milton Sands, with the impressive Thurlestone Rock, are situated just over a mile away, which is a 5-minute drive or an easy 30-minute walk.

The Space

Following a recent change in ownership, the property is new to the market as of July 2021. Accordingly, The Retreat has recently been fitted out with all-new furnishings and amenities designed to make your stay as homely and comfortable as possible. Pets are welcome.

The Retreat offers spacious accommodation with character. Inside, the superb sitting and dining rooms include a feature fireplace. There is also a study and kitchen, plus breakfast bar. The adjoining conservatory area has double doors opening out to the garden area. Completing the downstairs is a separate utility/shower room. Upstairs are two good sized double bedrooms with king-size beds, a third bedroom fitted with two sets of triple bunk beds capable of sleeping up to six children or adults and a family bathroom. Complimentary books, board games, and puzzles are left at the property for you to enjoy. The conservatory area opens out onto a paved courtyard garden with herringbone patio, BBQ, and large picnic table.

The remainder of the garden is accessed via a covered walkway leading to a newly laid sandstone terrace at the end of the grassy lawn which overlooks a stream with the tranquil sounds of a relaxing waterfall in the background. This is a very peaceful spot and a real sun-trap, which is perfect for some al fresco dining in the summer months.

Location

• Hope Cove is just a 5-minute drive away and consists of two stunning sandy beaches. The water quality is designated as excellent, so the ideal location for children to splash around. The chocolate box seaside village has lovely places for food including The Cove or The Hope & Anchor.

• Salcombe is just a 5-10 minute drive away, a charming little town on the bank of what is often described as the prettiest harbour in England. Picture-perfect pastel-coloured houses make up a Positano-like scene overlooking water, sandy beaches, and rolling green hills of the surrounding countryside. Salcombe has a uniquely wonderful array of shops ranging from an acclaimed grocer, butcher and baker to art galleries selling serious contemporary works and chic boutiques.

• Bantham is close too, just a 10-15 minute drive away. Nestling deep within the South Hams at the mouth of the River Avon is Bantham Beach. Beautiful scenery with panoramic views over Bigbury Bay and the famous Burgh Island, great for Agatha Christie fans to see. Great for surfing, and if you’re a beginner the Bantham Surfing Academy based there is perfect for lessons.

Reviews

Extremely well-equipped and immaculately kept house. We like to cook and play games, everything we could have wished for was there. Really clean in quiet location with very responsive and nice host. Village residents also super friendly. We had a great time. Would certainly recommend it.

Freya’s home was very comfortable and quiet. The kitchen had everything we needed to cook for the family. The check in and out was easy. The kids enjoyed the bunk room. We walked 30 mins to the beach at South Milton Sands which was lovely especially at sunset. The roads are narrow and it can be a little tricky driving around at busy times. Nearby beaches and Salcombe were also lovely.

Such a beautiful property! My friends and I had a lovely week, lots of space for people to chill in and a lovely garden. It was also incredibly well provisioned with everything you could need. A ten minute drive or 30 minute walk gets you to the beach. Couldn’t ask for anything more! The only issue was running out of hot water for showers and we kept having to move the parked cars due to farmers knocking on the door.
